AXL6. Trekking to the Darashkol Lake

Itinerary


Day 1. Arrive in Barnaul. Reception at the airport. Travel by bus to the b/c Vysotnik near the village of Tiungur. 750 km, 12-13 hours. Accommodation in tents.

Day 2. Start of the trek from the b/c Vysotnik through Kucherla – the tract Elan – the valley of the Kucherla river (1 300 m). Overnight stop is in trekking tents on the glade. It’s possible to reach Elan by a car. Duration of the passages is 20 km, 6-8 h.

Day 3 The valley of the Kucherla river – the Kucherla Lake (1 786 m). Overnight stop is on the lakeside. Duration of the passages is 15 km, 7-8 h.

Day 4. Lake Kucherla – the Upper Kucherla. A trail along the Kucherla Lake is full of obstruction. Overnight stop is nearby the ford across the Kucherla. Duration of the passages is 9 km, 5-6 h.

Day 5. The Upper Kucherla – the ford of one of the chanels of the Kucherla – Lake Darashkol (2 200 m). A rope is needed to ford the river. Far off is the upper waterfalls of river Ioldo-Airy. Dinner is prepared on gas. Duration of the passages is 11 km, 6-8 h.

Day 6. Day at Lake Darashkol. The way goes up along the Nemitskii stream towards the glacier of the same name.

Day 7. The Darashkol Lake – the Western Ioldo-Airi pass (1 Adifficulty level, 2 840 m) – the Ioldo pass (2 850 m) – the valley of the Northern Ioldo (Katunsky reserve). The way up goes by big stones, so you will have to jump from stone to stone. The way to the pass is very wet that’s why you should have another pair of shoes or very warm woolen socks. In bad weather it’s possible to make overnight stop at the foot of the pass and prepare food on gas. Then to the top of the range to the pass Ioldo - descent to the Northern Ioldo. Duration of the passages is 15 km, 8-9 h.

Day 8. Way down from the pass to the Ioldo valley – the Arukol Lake – hunters’ hut Khasinikha. Down along the Kuragan streams to the Arukol lake. Big stones, high grass in July, and stony paths hidden in grass. Accommodation in tents. Banya. Duration of the passages is 16 km, 8-9 h.

Day 9. Hunters’ hut Khasinikha – the river Osinovka – the river Alla-Askyr. Go along the Kuragan crossing its channels. The path to the Osinovka goes through the burned forest and by the bridge across this river and then goes by big stones. Descent to the river Alla-Askyr by high grass. Duration of the passages is 10 km, 3-4 h.

Days 10. The river Alla-Askyr – the brook Kyrgys (1 285 m) – the river Gromotukha. To the brook the path goes up by the long slopes. Cross the brook by the bridge with hand-rail, then go by path nearby mount Ermak (3132 m) by the right bank of the Kuragan. Then by the primeval valley of the brook Ermoshka. Duration of the passages is 20 km, 7-8 h.

Day 11. R. Gromotukha - The Katun River – the b. c. Vysotnik. A tractor laid road is the final part of the trip. It goes in a hilly area with underbrush of strawberry. We cross the Katun by ferry. Nearby there are mowing of inhabitants of Katanda village. At the camp – dinner in a cafe, accommodation in tents. Duration of the passages is 23 km, 6-7 h.

Day 12. Breakfast. Departure to Barnaul, Railway Station.

Notes and recommendations:

1. Good physical condition and absence oа contra indications for physical activity are required. The itinerary goes by a various types of mountain paths: big stones, snow, ice, loose rock, fords. Maximum altitude gain is 1000 m a day. The participants carry all their personal belongings and equally divided common equipment and food themselves. Children under 16 are not allowed to be on the route. Those of 16-18 years are permitted only with parents. The weather in mountains changed rather quickly. Precipitations are possible. The day temperature is +10+30 degrees, the temperature at night is 0+10, sometimes -5. In autumn the group goes by the Nemytsky pass and further by the path covered with ice-crust, that’s why climbing equipment will be necessary. The guide has the right to change the itinerary due to bad weather of the other unfavourable conditions.

2. MEALS. Participants are provided with 3 meals a day per program. At the base camps meals are getting at a cafe. On the trek food is cooked on the open fire.

3. PROVIDED EQUIPMENT: tents, fire outfit, ropes, gas, first-aid kit, satellite-based phone, crampons and ice-axes for the group.

4. ITEMS TO BRING WITH YOU:

T-shirt for hot weather, warm clothes (at nights it gets cold), trekking boots, waterproofs, rucksack for 60-100 liters, foam sleeping mat, 4 season sleeping bag, down jacket, gloves, hat, sun glasses and sun-protection lotion, individual tin ware.
